Dive Experience

Dive Experience operates at Mount Gambier, serving the freshwater cave and sinkhole diving community in what is the most internationally significant diving region in Australia.

The Lower South East's limestone is riddled with water-filled caves and sinkholes. Kilsby's Sinkhole has clarity that can exceed forty metres, with shafts of sunlight through the entrance producing the images the site is famous for. Piccaninnie Ponds has the Cathedral chamber and a chasm descending beyond a hundred metres. Tank Cave is one of the longest underwater cave systems in the country, a complex multi-branch maze restricted to the highest qualification categories.

Access is governed by the Cave Divers Association of Australia. The CDAA operates a site classification system, and a diver's category determines which sites they may enter — membership and the corresponding rating is generally how access is granted at all. The system exists because of a history of fatalities in the region, and its rules are specific responses to how those incidents happened.

Recreational certification does not qualify a diver for any of this. Caves remove the option of direct ascent, and everything else follows: continuous guideline to open water, strict gas reserve rules, redundant gas and lighting, silt management, restriction technique and complex navigation.

Ewens Ponds is the accessible exception — three shallow spring-fed ponds connected by channels, open to the sky and diveable without cave qualification, though a permit and booked time slot are required.

Worth confirming: which CDAA categories the business supports for training; whether twinsets, sidemount harnesses and stage cylinders are available for hire; oxygen, Nitrox and Trimix availability; CCR support and whether sorb is stocked; and reel, line and lighting supply. Freshwater weighting differs from ocean diving and is worth discussing before the first dive.

Freshwater weighting differs noticeably from ocean diving, and divers arriving from the coast consistently carry too much. Sorting weighting properly on the first dive of a Mount Gambier trip saves gas and improves buoyancy control in environments where both matter considerably more than usual.
