Nitrox Fills

Standard mixes, custom blending, and why a simple yes or no is not enough information.

Nitrox contains a higher oxygen fraction than normal air, and a proper fill directory needs more information than a simple yes or no field.

The practical questions are which mixes are available, whether custom blending is offered, what the fill method is, whether oxygen-clean cylinders are required, and whether an analyser is available for divers to use.

A centre that offers EAN32 from a membrane system is providing something different from one that partial-pressure blends custom mixes to order.

Fill method matters

Membrane systems produce a limited range of mixes but do not require oxygen-clean cylinders for standard recreational percentages. Partial-pressure blending allows any mix but involves handling pure oxygen and generally requires oxygen-clean cylinders.

This determines both what you can get and whether your own cylinder is suitable.

Always analyse your own cylinder

Divers should analyse their own cylinder before use and record the result, regardless of what the fill sheet says.

A mix labelled 32 percent that is actually 40 percent changes your maximum operating depth significantly. The analysis is the diver's responsibility, and every properly run facility expects you to do it.

Where Nitrox is worth seeking out

Nitrox delivers most value on repetitive multi-dive days — liveaboards, wreck trips and dive holidays where you are doing three or four dives daily.

It is available on most Great Barrier Reef liveaboards and at the majority of metropolitan Australian dive centres, though regional availability varies.

What a complete listing records

A simple yes or no tells a diver very little. These are the fields that actually distinguish one provider from another.

  • standard mixes offered
  • custom mixes
  • fill method — membrane, partial pressure or premix
  • oxygen-clean cylinder requirements
  • analyser available for divers
  • maximum advertised mix
  • pricing
  • date last verified

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own cylinder oxygen cleaned for Nitrox?

It depends on the fill method. Membrane-blended recreational mixes often do not require it; partial-pressure blending generally does. Ask the facility.

What mixes are usually available?

EAN32 and EAN36 are the common standards. Custom mixes depend on the facility's blending capability.

Is Nitrox more expensive?

Usually somewhat more than air, varying by facility and mix. On a multi-dive day the extended no-decompression time often justifies it.
