SDI

A recreational agency closely associated with TDI, giving an unusually direct route into technical training.

SDI is the recreational arm of the organisation that also operates TDI, and that relationship is its distinguishing feature.

Because the recreational and technical agencies share an organisation, the progression from recreational diving into technical training is unusually seamless — the same centre and often the same instructor can take a diver from Open Water through decompression procedures.

SDI was also an early adopter of computer-based training, teaching dive computers as the primary planning tool rather than tables.

Why the SDI/TDI link matters in Australia

Several of the Australian centres most clearly associated with technical capability carry SDI/TDI affiliation, particularly in Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland.

For a diver who intends to progress toward decompression or Trimix diving, starting at a centre that teaches both halves of the pathway removes a transition later.
