Decompression Diving
When the option of a direct ascent is deliberately given up, and what that changes.
Recreational dives are generally planned to allow direct ascent without mandatory staged decompression. Technical decompression intentionally creates an obligation.
That changes the emergency model. Gas planning becomes critical because direct ascent may no longer be the planned response to every problem — the diver must be able to complete the decompression regardless of what fails.
It is the conceptual dividing line between recreational and technical diving, and it matters more than depth alone.
Technical equipment is designed around realistic failure management. Once a diver cannot simply surface, every critical system needs a backup.

Technical training requires a diver to perform tasks while maintaining control. Holding a stop at 6 metres in swell with a stage cylinder is genuinely difficult without good buoyancy.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a dive technical?
Mandatory decompression, overhead environments, gas switching, helium, increased redundancy, rebreathers or significant penetration. A 25-metre cave can be more technically demanding than an open-water 35-metre reef dive.
Can I do a short decompression stop on recreational equipment?
Recreational training and equipment are not designed for it. An unplanned decompression obligation is an emergency; a planned one requires technical training and redundancy.
