Abyss Scuba Diving works Sydney's southern beaches and Botany Bay, which puts it alongside some of the best shore diving in Australia and within easy reach of the offshore sites that make Sydney a technical diving city.

Bare Island at La Perouse is the anchor. It is one of Australia's most-dived shore sites and genuinely world-class — weedy seadragons, extraordinary nudibranch diversity, pygmy pipehorses, anglerfish, octopus and Port Jackson sharks in winter, across several distinct routes at different depths. On a weekend morning the car park is a reliable meeting point for half the city's divers.

Across the bay, Kurnell offers a cluster of shore entries — The Steps, The Leap, Inscription Point — that reach genuine wall and drop-off terrain past twenty metres, which is unusual for a shore dive anywhere.

Botany Bay's sheltered aspect is its practical advantage. It is diveable when the open coast is not, which for a Sydney diver means the difference between diving most weekends and diving occasionally.

Training runs from entry level through professional and technical levels. Sydney's combination of accessible shore diving for skills work and deep offshore terrain for application is why the city's training market goes as deep as it does.

For technical progression, verify capabilities individually rather than relying on the label: the agency and course levels offered; whether Trimix and helium are available and how reliably; which CCR units are supported; stage cylinder hire; and cylinder testing and oxygen cleaning. On the recreational side, ask about class sizes, which brands are serviced, and Nitrox mixes. Buoyancy matters unusually much at the Botany Bay sites — the sediment is fine and easily stirred.

Bare Island is busy on weekends, and that is worth planning around rather than complaining about. Early mornings are quieter, the parking is easier, and the visibility has not yet been stirred up by thirty divers working the same sponge gardens.
