For anyone heading to Mount Gambier, ask whether cave and technical equipment is stocked.

South Australia's best diving is free and shore-accessible, which makes the economics of owning equipment strongly favourable. A diver using Rapid Bay, Edithburgh and Port Noarlunga regularly will recoup the cost of a kit within a season.

Timing matters more in South Australia than in most states because the headline attractions are seasonal and geographically separate. The cuttlefish at Whyalla run May to August; leafy seadragon breeding on the Fleurieu peaks in spring; cave access at Mount Gambier is year-round but qualification-gated.
