South Australia rewards divers who own their equipment. The state's best diving is shore-accessible jetty diving — Rapid Bay, Edithburgh, Port Noarlunga, Second Valley — which is free, available year-round and well suited to repeated short dives. That pattern makes hire gear impractical and makes a well-fitted personal kit genuinely worthwhile.

Exposure protection is the critical purchase. Water runs thirteen to twenty-two degrees, so a seven millimetre suit, semi-dry or drysuit is standard, and hoods and gloves are normal through winter. The state's signature experiences each have equipment consequences. Worth confirming: cylinder visual inspection and hydrostatic testing availability; Nitrox and any technical gas; which brands are serviced in-house and with what turnaround; whether cave and technical equipment is stocked or can be ordered; and the training agency and course range, including whether any technical pathways are offered.

For divers working toward Mount Gambier, the equipment path starts well before cave training. Twinset or sidemount configuration, redundant lighting and buoyancy refinement all need to be established first, and a shop that understands cave requirements is worth finding early.

Night diving is where South Australian jetty sites are at their best, particularly Edithburgh. That means lighting is a primary purchase rather than an accessory — a reliable primary torch and at least one backup transforms what the state's diving offers.
