Shellharbour Scuba

Shellharbour Scuba serves the Illawarra, an hour south of Sydney, and works a stretch of coast that is quieter than the city's sites and in several respects better.

Bass Point is the region's anchor. A rocky headland with several distinct entries — The Gutter, Bushrangers Bay, the Arch — it offers temperate reef, kelp and a genuine range of conditions depending on which entry you use and what the swell is doing. Bushrangers Bay is an aquatic reserve and the most sheltered of the options, which makes it a natural training site.

The species mix is classic New South Wales temperate: eastern blue gropers following divers around, Port Jackson sharks aggregating through winter, octopus, cuttlefish, wobbegongs, rays and a solid nudibranch population for anyone prepared to look slowly.

What distinguishes the Illawarra from Sydney is how quiet it is. Sites that would carry fifty divers on a Sydney weekend frequently have nobody on them, which changes the experience considerably. Sydney divers and clubs regularly run trips south for exactly that reason.

Shore entries here involve some rock scrambling and are swell-dependent, which makes local knowledge about which entry to use on a given day genuinely valuable. A centre embedded in the region knows.

Worth confirming: whether servicing and cylinder testing are available in-house; Nitrox availability; whether boat diving is offered and to which sites; the training agency and course range; and whether there is a club or regular trip schedule. For Sydney divers, this is close enough to be a regular weekend option rather than a trip requiring planning.

Bass Point's multiple entries are its main advantage, because there is usually one that works. The Gutter, Bushrangers Bay and the Arch all have different swell tolerances, and local advice about which to use on a given day is worth asking for rather than guessing.
