Byron Bay Dive Centre

Byron Bay Dive Centre provides training and daily access to Julian Rocks, the marine reserve that makes Byron one of the most consistently rewarding dive destinations on the east coast.

Julian Rocks is unusual in being both excellent and accessible. A short boat ride from the beach reaches a site where more than twenty species of sharks and rays have been recorded, where tropical and temperate species occur together, and where a newly certified diver and a photographer with a thousand dives can both have a good day on the same reef.

The ecology is the result of geography. The site sits at the meeting point of warm water pushed south on the East Australian Current and cooler temperate water, which produces a species mix that neither system would support alone. It also means the diving changes character through the year rather than staying constant.

Seasonality should drive trip planning. Late summer brings leopard sharks, manta rays and the strongest tropical influence; cooler months bring grey nurse sharks in numbers. Turtles, wobbegongs and rays are year-round residents.

Byron is a good place to do an introductory dive for exactly the reasons the site suits everyone — close, sheltered in most conditions, shallow options available, and reliably full of life. For a first breath underwater, it is considerably more memorable than a pool.

Establish before booking: the training agency and current course range, group sizes on both courses and fun dives, Nitrox availability, and equipment sizing. The beach launch means trips are weather-dependent, so anyone travelling specifically to dive Julian Rocks should allow more than a single day. Marine park sanctuary rules apply at the site — nothing may be taken.

Byron's beach launch means trips are more weather-sensitive than a harbour departure would be, and the surf entry into the boat is part of the experience. It is straightforward and crews handle it well, but divers who are unsteady or carrying injuries should mention it when booking.
