Bicheno Dive Centre

Bicheno Dive Centre services the Governor Island Marine Reserve, immediately offshore from the town and home to some of the most colourful temperate diving in Australia.

Governor Island has been protected since 1991, and it shows. The combination of protection, current-swept granite and cool nutrient-rich water produces sponge gardens of unusual density and colour — the site photographs far more vividly than most people expect from cold water, and divers arriving with tropical assumptions are routinely surprised.

Sites include walls, swim-throughs and the well-known Golden Bommies, with butterfly perch, crayfish, sea whips and temperate reef life throughout. The reserve is close to shore, which means short transits and the ability to dive when conditions elsewhere on the coast are marginal.

Bicheno's east-coast position gives it somewhat more shelter than the Tasman Peninsula, which makes it a more reliable destination across a trip. Winter frequently produces the clearest water, which is counterintuitive for divers used to associating summer with good visibility.

Water runs roughly twelve to eighteen degrees, so a seven millimetre semi-dry is the practical minimum and drysuits are common among regular divers. Good lighting matters more than most visitors expect — the sponge gardens have little colour without it.

Worth confirming: the course range and training agency; drysuit hire availability and sizing; Nitrox availability; which specific sites are run in the prevailing conditions; and whether lighting can be hired. For photographers, asking about the operation's familiarity with the sponge garden sites is worthwhile — knowing where the best growth is makes a considerable difference.

Lighting matters more at Bicheno than at almost any Australian site. The sponge gardens have little visible colour without it, and divers who bring only a small backup torch come up wondering what everyone else was photographing.

Governor Island sits close enough to shore that transits are minutes rather than half an hour, which makes multi-dive days straightforward. For photographers that matters — repeated visits to the same sponge wall produce far better results than a single pass.
