Wollongong and Shellharbour offer reefs, local shore opportunities and offshore diving within about an hour of Sydney, which makes the region a regular weekend option for Sydney divers as well as a local market in its own right.
Bass Point is the best-known feature, a rocky headland with several entries and a marine reserve area that supports a good range of temperate species.
The region is quieter than Sydney, and sites that would be crowded further north are often empty here.
