Perth's diving is shaped by limestone. The coastline and offshore reefs erode into ledges, caverns, swim-throughs and small walls that produce interesting terrain at modest depth — a different underwater landscape from either tropical coral or the granite and kelp of the southern states.

Rottnest Island is the local benchmark. Eighteen kilometres off Fremantle, it offers limestone caverns and swim-throughs, walls and ledges, and marine life reflecting the Leeuwin Current's warm influence — tropical species considerably further south than the latitude suggests.

For training, Perth strikes a useful balance. Water around eighteen to twenty-three degrees means students learn proper exposure protection and weighting without the task loading that eleven-degree Victorian water adds. Conditions are varied enough to teach something real, and there is excellent diving available immediately after certification.

Professional training is documented, which suits divers considering Divemaster or instructor pathways. The variable that matters in any professional programme is how much genuine teaching involvement a candidate gets, which depends entirely on the centre's real course volume — worth asking about directly.

Worth confirming: whether technical training is offered and under which agency; servicing and cylinder testing availability and turnaround; Nitrox and any technical gas; Rottnest charter access and frequency; and class sizes for recreational courses. For professional candidates, ask specifically how many courses you will assist on and whether you will guide certified divers.

Rottnest is the obvious progression once certified, and it is worth planning for rather than treating as an eventual maybe. The limestone caverns and swim-throughs are a genuinely different kind of diving from the mainland coast, and they justify the charter cost.

Western Australian divers should also plan for the state's distances early. The best diving is a long way from Perth in every direction, and divers who build toward a Ningaloo or Abrolhos trip get considerably more from certification than those who only dive locally.
