The largest reef-dwelling bony fish in the world, and a defining feature of the SS Yongala.

Queensland gropers are the largest bony fish found on coral reefs anywhere, reaching well over two and a half metres, and encountering one is a genuinely disorienting experience of scale.

The SS Yongala is the classic Australian site for them. The wreck sits on an otherwise featureless sand plain and concentrates everything structure-dependent in the area, gropers included, and several large residents are well known to regular operators.

They are protected in Queensland waters and are generally indifferent to divers, though a fish that size moving past at close range commands attention regardless.
