Bundaberg & Southern Great Barrier Reef

Coral cays and island resorts — Lady Elliot, Lady Musgrave and Heron Island.

Southern Great Barrier Reef diving includes island and reef destinations such as Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave, along with Heron Island further north.

These are coral cays rather than mainland-access reefs, which changes the experience considerably. Diving is generally a short boat ride from the island, visibility is often excellent, and manta ray encounters are a defining feature of the region.

Resort-centre profiles need to explain what facilities are available on the island itself and which services require advance booking. On a coral cay, "available" and "available without pre-booking" are very different things.

Why the southern reef is different

The southern Great Barrier Reef sits further from the mainland and outside the main tourism corridor. Visitor numbers are lower, the water is often clearer, and the reef systems are discrete cays rather than a continuous barrier.

Manta rays are the signature attraction, particularly around Lady Elliot Island, where cleaning stations produce reliable seasonal encounters.
