The Mornington Peninsula supports both beginner shore diving and advanced boat diving, often from the same launching points.
Official tourism material identifies shore-diving opportunities around Flinders, Mornington, Dromana, Portsea and Rye, along with deeper wreck and wall diving offshore.
The piers are the region's signature. Blairgowrie, Rye, Portsea and Flinders provide shore access to marine life that would otherwise require a boat, and they are among the best macro diving in Australia.

Piers provide excellent access to seahorses, weedy seadragons, rays, squid, crustaceans and dense macro life, often in only a few metres of water.
However, pier diving still requires attention to real hazards. Shore access does not make a site trivial.

- visibility, which can change quickly
- tides affecting depth and current
- low light beneath the structure
- entry and exit points affected by sea state
Heading offshore from the peninsula introduces a different category of diving entirely.
Deeper profiles, tide-sensitive sites, historic wrecks, walls and blue-water ascents all require planning that a pier dive does not.
